Mobile Learning Tools #2

In January I posted a listing of tools for mobile learning and received some great comments. (Thank you)

Now I am working on presentations and workshops for upcoming conferences this Fall and Winter and have been updating a much longer listing. I know that there are several missing in the content and K-12 areas, but what else? Are you using any tools for mobile learning development or deployment that are not listed on this new listing? Mobile Live Video Streaming

I have been looking at live video streaming tools for mobile and have tested several in preparation to writing a blog, but yesterday found that Robin Good had published an excellent guide of 11 such tools along with side-by-side their key features and options.

His is an excellent overview with a comparison chart plus individual product descriptions.

New School Alert System

This week I received a message from Jonathan Hoover about a new application his not-for-profit organization had released. I do not recommend products, but thought that this sounded like something that may be of interest to school administrators reading this blog. Note that I have not tried it, but if you have a need, it should be worth a look.

Through Schoohoo (www.schoohoo.com) he and his wife programmed an application to deliver free school alerts to schools of any size and at any grade level "From Preschool to Ph.D."(tm).

Alerts are sent via text message and email to parents, students, faculty, staff and others in the community about emergencies, but also weather closings, holidays, other days off, registration dates/times, PTA events, and the like. Parents can sign up themselves, so the school doesn't have to maintain the database. There will be a short advertisement included, or an advertisement-free version is available starting at $500 per year.

Blackboard Goes Mobile

Congratulations to Blackboard for releasing their first mobile learning app. This is further indication that there is definitely movement in the direction of mobile for learning. (Desire2Learn had already released 2GO for use with the BlackBerry.)

I did download the Blackboard application on an iPhone, but don't have a BlackBoard account so can't really test it. The comments in the Apple App Store are quite negative. Have you tried it? If so, what is your reaction?

Mobile Learning Shootout at Training 09 Expo Learning Trends Lab

Last week in Atlanta vendors competed in a Mobile Learning Tools Shootout

In January we tasked the vendors with taking a mobile demonstration site, http://crisisresponse.mobi, to the next level. I had created this initial site last year to demonstrate a quick and easy mobile performance support site.

The guidelines were:

We don’t want to tell you exactly how to structure your materials. Please feel free to create it anyway you’d like utilizing the features of your tool. Basically, do whatever you feel meets the Objective listed below.
Please track your time to develop, as you will be asked this. Total time should be limited to 40 hours and will be part of the criteria used to judge.
Due to lack of time at the event, all development is to be completed prior to the Shootout. Because you are building the materials in advance, please feel free to make it as robust as possible with media, interactivity, etc.

Objective: Upon accessing this material the user will be able to quickly recall the procedures and issues related to their crisis.

The participating vendors were Humentum, emantras and OnPoint Digital.

Congratulations to OnPoint Digital CellCast Solution who won in all four categories: Authoring - Ease of Use; Platforms Supported; Development Time; and Overall Improvement to the Basic Content. The solution provided showcased multiple capabilities available on multiple platforms and was created in under 7 hours.

Mobile Learning Tools

At presentations and workshops, I am often asked to recommend tools for authoring mobile learning. I do not recommend any tools, but do encourage them to check with their current authoring tool vendor to see what their plans are for mobile, as many vendors are moving in this direction.
