Last week in a workshop on mobile learning I was looking for something interesting in that difficult time right after lunch. So I decided to talk about where mobile is going and thus additional opportunities for mobile learning. There was quite a bit of interest, so I uploaded it to SlideShare and in less than a week have had over 2,000 views and some great comments, but no additional suggestions.

My Reflections on the Mobile World Congress

Over my career I have become a technology "conference veteran" beginning with Comdex in the 80’s. This event grew to over 220,000 attendees and over 20,000 vendors. For several years I was privileged to be a judge for Best of Comdex, so became very familiar with the conference. Following the closing of this show, I have attended the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), but it never has reached the same size or stature of Comdex (in my opinion.)

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) last week in Barcelona reminded me of the early days of Comdex. There was a lot of excitement with new announcements such as LG’s 3D phone, Sony’s Experia Play, HTC ChaCha and Salsa devices with integrated Facebook, new Samsung devices and lots of tablets from companies such as HTC with their Flyer, Samsung which includes a pen, Motorola’s Xoom and RIM’s PlayBook, all trying to distinguish themselves from the absent iPad.

I was honored to serve as a judge for the Mobile World Congress 2011 16th annual Global Mobile Awards in the category of Best mLearning Innovation. This is the first time that mobile learning has been recognized. The winner was Urban Planet Mobile from Savannah, Georgia, for their mobile English learning initiative. Actually there were two mLearning winners as the mobile learning project BBC Janala, also for learning English, won the Best Product, Initiative or Service for Underserved Segment category.

There was really no other focus on mobile learning at the conference other than an invitation only mLearning Convening Session hosted by the GSMA Development Fund and an open mLearning Business Breakfast hosted by the same organization. Hopefully next year there will be additional focus on mobile learning. (mHealth was evident though.)

The buzz was about Android, security, services, reliability, mHealth, the Microsoft/Nokia partnership, femtocells, NFC, cloud services, mobile money and global opportunities for mobile. As with most technology conferences 3LAs (three letter acronyms) were everywhere including NFC, GPS, LTE, WAC, LBS, RCS (and definitely app, although not an acronym.)

Some of my surprises included:

Most of the attendees were clad in black suits and ties and most were male.
The U.S. presence was much higher than I would have expected at this global conference with most keynoters from the U.S.
Security was as high as I have seen with badges scanned regularly. They were also checked against your passport upon entry each day.
My co-worker was unable to join me as planned due to illness. I wanted to get him some sort of MWC souvenir, but there was no place to purchase such things. Definitely a missed opportunity for the sponsors. GSMA.

In reflecting on the event there were some definite pluses:

The keynotes and sessions were excellent although many rooms were over-filled and could not hold all those interested. Most of the speakers were CEOs, with Carol Bartz, CEO of Yahoo! as the lone woman.
Show transportation was excellent. On time and well coordinated.
Recycling was evident throughout the conference with yellow, green and blue bins. It was as well throughout the city.
The venue was kept very clean with service employees clearing your plate as soon as you took the last bite.

My disappointments included:

Apple, although the winner of the device of the year with the iPhone 4, was noticeably absent (although this is expected from Apple as they just do not participate in such conferences.)
For an organization (GSMA) giving awards for the best mobile apps, their conference app was terrible. Imagine a vendor listing of almost 1,400 with no search or even the capability to move to an individual letter of the alphabet. I was searching for a vendor whose name started with W and gave up before my hand got tired scrolling. Many of the app links were to web pages not available where Wi-Fi was not available.
The venue was very interesting with historical buildings mixed with the latest technology. There were eight buildings with several displays outdoors in temporary structures between the main halls. The problem was most of the walkways were cobblestones making walking difficult (especially for the few women in heels and with light rain.)
Signage, especially for registration from the transportation area, was lacking.
Smoking areas were right in front of doors forcing non-smokers to pass through the smoke.
There was little or no handicap access.
The wireless was very poor with many demonstrations failing due to lack of connectivity. I had to come to one vendor before the doors opened at 9:00 to see their app even using their own wireless since at 9:00 the conference opened and wireless connectivity seemed to disappear.

I am so glad that I was able to attend (coming from another meeting in London) and to be there when mobile learning became recognized as mainstream by the industry.

mLearnCon Mobile Learning Content

This has already been a full week at mLearnCon in San Diego and we still have one more day to go.

The keynotes (by Tomi Ahonen and Mimi Ito) were great and I learned something from each session concurrent I attended. For a first year conference, it was awesome and the eLearningGuild has started a hard act for themselves to follow.

On Monday Dr. Rovy Brannon, Jason Haag, Chris Raasch and I conducted a full-day workshop “Creating a Successful mLearning Strategy: From Planning to Implementation”. We had a great group with lots of good questions.

In preparation for the workshop, Jason and I had been working on a mobile application with content all about mobile learning. We had gathered resources that we had been using in workshops and presentations for ADL and decided to make it available on various mobile devices. The content is still being developed and decisions are being made. We see this as a work in process and plan to make the final content available using various authoring tools for mobile.

We had planned to work on and discuss the possibilities with the content during the workshop, but did not have the available time. We did give the participants URLs for their feedback. They were tweeted, so word spread quite quickly. Some thought this was intended to be a course--which it is not--but could definitely serve as resources or check lists for a course on mobile learning.

To begin, we have two versions. The first was built using plain HTML and appears to run on all mobile devices with browsers. You can access it at http://emerginged.com/adlmobile. The second was built using iWebkit and CSS and appears to run well on the iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, several Nokia devices and Windows Mobile. It is available at http://mlearnopedia.com/adl/mobile. Both have the same content. Going forward we plan to provide enhanced version using commercial mobile authoring tools.

In any case, we are now looking for your feedback. What would you like to see included? What doesn’t work for mobile? Please let us hear from you at adl@mlearnopedia.com. Once it has reached a more finished state, we plan to make these and all other versions available on the ADL website.

March Madness

No, I am not talking about basketball, but mobile learning sessions in March.

Starting with the ELI 2010 Online Spring Focus Session—Mobile Learning 2.0: The Next Phase of Innovation in Mobility on March 3–4, 2010, this has been a very busy month for presentations with growing interest in mobile learning. Educause ELI has posted all the presentations, discussions and materials from the 2-day sessions here. I was honored to present the opening keynote session and attended most of the other sessions. It was a very well run event with excellent questions and discussions. Check out the post event resources.

Next week I will be in Orlando for the eLearningGuild's Learning Solutions conference. I will be presenting on Wednesday at 4:00 and will be facilitating a breakfast bytes discussion on mobile learning that morning at 7:15. I hope to see you there.

2010 Forecasts

I intended to write a blog entry in late December with my predictions for mobile learning in 2010, but somehow never found the time. Since then I have since been reading some other predictions and think they covered most of what I would have said. Bottom line today is that the questions are no longer "why?" but "how?".

Mobile devices have certainly come into their own with champions and examples everywhere. I no longer feel that I am a single voice trying to convince of the importance of these ubiquitous capabilities to the future of learning.

In fact, Tech Crunch's Ten Technologies That Will Rock 2010, over half of them are mobile.

Following are a few of the blog predictions that I have noted (in no particular order):

Mobile Technologies
This year set the stage for a more robust mobile learning space, where limitations in access, power and speed had to be overcome. Due to more powerful mobile data networks, ubiquitous access to wireless, mobile tools that work across platforms and more smart phones and devices that are Flash ready, many types of learning can be set free from the personal computer. More organizations are exploring mobile learning to provide just-in-time resources and learning objects to an increasingly mobile and virtual workforce.

Expect mobile learning to increase. There's been talk about learning from the handheld devices for years but I think we are close to realizing learning on-the-go. One issue is around a mobile standard for learning content. Each mobile device displays content differently and creating content for each device is unrealistic. Projects are under way that address this hurdle. The other question is about content appropriate for the handheld device. Certainly, a learner is not going to take a long in-depth course from a mobile device. Rather, assessments, simple graphical charts, and short pieces of learning without heavy text seem best suited for formal mobile learning.

Mobile: The same-time, same-place model of learning will slowly disappear, as corporate learners look to mobile devices for their learning. In a number of countries, there are now more mobiles than people. For example, as of 2009, for every 100 individuals in the United Kingdom there were 123.64 mobile subscriptions. Global System For Mobile Communications projects that by 2012, there will be 4.5 billion mobile subscriptions out of a global population of 7 billion. Already, several financial service firms such as Bank of America and Wells Fargo are exploring using mobile phones to deliver compliance training, product training and performance support/on-the-job aids.

Mobile learning
This is another area that may have suffered a bit from over-exposure. Regardless, given the rapid adoption and evolution of smart phones, the move to mobile platforms as a significant learning environment is only a matter of time. One damper on progress has been the diversity and incompatibility of devices, and the lack of Flash on one of them, but this is becoming less of a problem as browser-based applications become available. By the end of 2010, m-Learning will be well-established as a delivery option.

Mobile Learning Jam Reflections

Last week in San Jose I was pleased to participate at DevLearn in the Mobile Learning Jam. Thanks to Jay Cross for taking this picture and posting it on Flickr.

For two days plus there were 15 sessions -- in addition to 9 regular conference sessions -- all about mobile learning. At times the noise and commotion in the hall area made it difficult to hear and the afternoon sun caused some attendees to get out their sunglasses inside, but there was considerable interest. The questions and comments from the attendees was awesome. All in all it was very tiring, but lots of fun!

I was involved in 7 sessions plus 3 breakfast byte discussions. One of the sponsors, OnPoint Digital created a mobile app for the Mobile Learning Jam materials. If you have a mobile device and want to take a look at the app and all the presentations on your mobile, go to http://mlj.mlearning.com and self-register. You will receive an email with instructions specific to your device.

I was very pleased that mobile learning was in a class with performance support and user generated content. Learning professionals are beginning to understand the importance of mobile access to learning and support at the time and place of need.

Over 100,000 iPhone/iPod Apps

Apple just announced that the app store has surpassed 100,000 apps.

"Apple® today announced that developers have created over 100,000 apps for the revolutionary App Store, the largest applications store in the world. iPhone® and iPod touch® customers in 77 countries can choose from an incredible range of apps in 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel. App Store users have downloaded well over two billion apps, continuing to make it the world’s most popular applications store."

Because of the sheer volume of apps, it is getting harder and harder to locate good education and training apps. I am currently exploring a new iPhone app released yesterday entitled Chorus.

"Chorus is an intuitive, fun and easy way to connect with friends to see the apps they're using, which apps they rate highly, and to stay up-to-date on the hottest new apps available. Now available for iPhone and iPod touch®, Chorus features real-time feeds from your designated friends, displaying the apps they are downloading, and what they are saying about them. You save time and money by viewing what your friends bought, and what they think about them, before you buy or download."

Spacing Effect for Mobile Learning

For some time I have been reviewing research on the spacing effect of learning for maximum recollection. This research has been documented for over 100 years. In the past with teaching at specific times and places, this has been difficult and expensive to implement, but today with ubiquitous communication devices in our pockets and purses, it is easy to accomplish.

Dr. Will Thalheimer has been reviewing the literature and writing about the spacing effect for some time. See Spacing Learning Over Time: A Research Based Secret from the June 2007 ASTD Annual Conference.

Several mobile learning products have integrated the capability to send reminders and spaced knowledge checks, but they have not been implemented to any degree yet.

SpacedEd has a Beta site called Addictive Learning That Sticks using the research on the spacing effect. You can also view their list of frequently asked questions or check out the peer-reviewed research behind spaced education in their Research section.

This is how SpacedEd has structures their materials:

Each learner receives 2 questions every day via email.
If a question is answered incorrectly, it will be repeated 1 week later.
If a question is answered correctly, it will be repeated 3 weeks later.
If a question is answered correctly two times in a row, the item is retired from the course and is no longer repeated.
The learner completes the course when all of the questions are retired (answered correctly twice in a row).

Today MIT's Technology Review ran a story An App so You'll Never Forget: Adaptive-learning algorithms calculate how often people need to see information to remember it about a new iPhone app based in Tokyo called Smart.fm.

Spaced learning is one application of mobile learning that will grow in importance as we open our eyes to the additional capabilities afforded by using mobile devices.

Commercial Mobile Learning Content Examined

I have been looking at some commercial mobile training modules recently and have found some excellent examples -- as well as some lessons learned.

The first one is Presenter Pro for the iPhone ($.99 in the iTunes store). The content includes presentation skills techniques with supporting graphics, audio, and video; hundreds of quick tips accessible by shaking the device; a checklist feature to capture and email any content for later review; notes capability; practice exercises; and knowledge check quizzes.

There is a lot of information and it is organized for quick retrieval. Overall the UI is quite good, however when arriving at the end of the knowledge check, there is only a previous and next. The next does not work, so the user needs to assume that they have finished and need to go back to the main menu. How much nicer it would have been if QA has caught that and added text either with the score or some text like congratulations you have completed the knowledge check, press here to return to the main menu. In addition, a nice feature would be to offer to return to the applicable content for review when missing a question rather than just saying sorry, try again.

Understanding Photoshop Quick Fixes ($1.99 in the iTunes Store) includes three modules plus an introduction and help section. Each of the modules has videos, tips and a quiz. Favorites and a search feature are included, plus an included recent Twitter feed from @rhedpixel. The quiz feature is quite nice with the results, as well as a link to the video for missed questions. Unlike Presenter Pro, there is no easy access overview of the content, but there is the search feature. The videos are well done. By submitting your email address you receive a link with the examples from the video. These are only available on a computer -- not an iPod or iPhone and must be downloaded separately for each module.

Thanks to an email from Dr. Davide Terranova fom Italy, I checked out his new site medicalearning. Currently there are four care and management modules featured for asthma, diabetes, hypertension and influenza virus H1-N1. The modules use Flash Lite and are available for a large number of phones (and even larger following the recent Adobe announcement of upcoming partnerships and availability of the Flash player on mobile devices.) The catalog, store and clean user interface are quite nice. Check it out.

Mobile Web Best Practices

You may be familiar with the W3C Mobile Web Best Practices 1.0 for delivering Web content to mobile devices (July 2008). It is an excellent reference resource.

Thanks to MAMK's recent posting, I found a great condensed reference of the same in a flipcard format (PDF).

They provide students and staff with the access and information they need via their mobile devices. The application automatically provides both an icon-based layout for current higher-end phones or a text format for older phones.

Google Wave and Mobile Learning

I have been experimenting with Google Wave and so far am pleased with what I see. I am not certain how much this will be used for mobile learning, but was pleasantly surprised that it works on the iPhone (although there is a warning that that browser is not supported.) It can tend to be a little slow, but usable.

Here are a couple screen shots from my iPhone.

If you have a Google Wave account, please join me on a new public Wave I created to discuss mobile learning. You should be able to find it by title "Mobile Learning" or creator Judy Brown or judycb. I have not yet figured that out. ;-) UPDATED: I just added some tags and you should be able to find it by entering "tag:mobile learning" (without the quotes) into the search box and choosing Mobile Learning Public Wave. Mobile Learning Tools #2

Clever Use of Twitter for Mobile Learning

One of the most clever integrations of social learning into mobile learning I have seen comes from Transparent Language's Byki Global for iPhone.

As with many other flashcard type language learning tools, there are screens with the word(s) plus audio, quizzes and stats, but they added a Twitter link. When pressing the Twitter icon at the bottom of the screen, the most recent tweets using that word or phrase are shown in that language. How cool is that?

If you have an iPod Touch or iPhone you can download this app free from the Apple App Store. Included are essential words and phrases in 15 languages including Chinese, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Tagalog.

For the serious language learner, there are also single language apps available for $7.99.

Mobile Learning K-12 Chat

Last week I participated in a "chat" for Education Week entitled "Emerging Mobile Technologies for K-12 Classrooms". Unfortunately the co-presenter had technical difficulties and was unable to connect until half way so I typed as fast as I could. ;-)

After the session I received several requests for further information about mobile learning and disabilities which is not my area of specialty, but an interest. Recently I read a couple papers addressing this issue, but they were for conference proposals and not yet available. I went back through some of my notes and responded with the following:

Forum Mobile Learning: Are we there yet?

Last Friday I participated in a Mobile Learning Forum at the 25th Annual Distance Teaching & Learning Conference along with Richard Culatta and Gary Marrer. It started at 8:00 am and continued through both the first and second sessions. Most of the attendees were in discovery or planning stages for mobile learning, but the questions and discussions were excellent.

Mobile Live Video Streaming

I have been looking at live video streaming tools for mobile and have tested several in preparation to writing a blog, but yesterday found that Robin Good had published an excellent guide of 11 such tools along with side-by-side their key features and options.

His is an excellent overview with a comparison chart plus individual product descriptions.

Yet Another Global K-12 Success Story

Elliot Soloway and Cathie Norris recently blogged Hong Kong School Leads the World in Cellphone Computer Use after visiting Pui Ching Middle School in Hong Kong. Students are currently using cellphones to help learn English and current events, but are also moving to use them for math and Chinese.

Pictures are available here. It is easy to see how engaged and happy the students appear to be.

The good news is that now when I talk with organizations about mobile learning, the questions have moved from "why?" to "how?" It seems to be a given that we are all moving in this direction, but the questions are what can we learn from others who are already "there?" This may well be a great example for K-12 to follow.

Mobile Learning Reading

It is great to see some new books on mobile learning. Recently there was a lot of buzz about Mobile Learning: Transforming the Delivery of Education and Training edited by Mohamed Ally (March 2009). I had read a couple chapters and got back to it this last week on my Kindle while travelling.

While useful, I was disappointed that most of the examples were from the early and mid-2000’s.

Having followed and participated in mobile learning since 1996, I see very clear stages and believe that we should now be looking forward at the potential of this very powerful opportunity.

We began with standalone devices (PDA) that could be connected to a single computer for a single person. Once these devices were combined with a cell phone, communication opened up. With today’s capabilities to seamlessly move from cellular to Wi-Fi, collaboration opens many more doors. Location-based context and tagging, sensors and feedback, recognition and specialized apps now open up our imaginations and provide powerful learning opportunities not even available on a desktop.

There are three new books just published that appear to be current and looking ahead. I have just started reviewing them, but wanted to share in case you are looking to add to your reading lists on mobile learning:

New technologies, new pedagogies: Mobile learning in higher education from the University of Wollongong includes faculty development, specific discipline examples and design principles. This is available as a free PDF download.
Mobile Learning Communities: Creating New Educational Futures by Patrick Danaher, Beverley Moriarty, Geoff Danaher, a Routledge publication covering communities, along with other topics such as globalization, lifelong learning, multiliteracies, and sustainability; concluding with creating new educational futures.
Researching Mobile Learning: Frameworks, Tools and Research Designs from Peter Lang Publishing Group, which sets out the issues and requirements for mobile learning research and presents efforts to specify appropriate theoretical frameworks, research methods and tools.

Catching up over the long weekend

In preparation for 3 upcoming workshops the first week in June, I have been reorganizing and reviewing my various notes during this long weekend. Thus just some random entries on my mind...

If you missed the LearnTrends e-Learning Tour last Thursday, you can access the recording here. Our mobile portion is the first video. You will see various types of mobile learning, hear an interesting podcast option, and learn about the iPhone/iPod Touch initiative at Abilene Christian University. It appeared that we had about 125 attendees and lots of good questions and follow up since then.

Any of you researchers with iPhones available who are crunching data and looking at different ways to visualize it, check out RoamBi. There is a TryMe application on the site to view from a desktop if you don't have an iPhone. Oh, did I mention that the app was free?

I have been excited about 2D barcodes for learning for some time, but now that they seem to have almost arrived in the U.S., there may be other options as well. This week there was an article in USA Today entitled "New '2D barcodes' puts info at the tip of your camera phone" which discussed some 2D initiatives with companies such as Nike, Sears and Hardee's. I have thought that once these readers were readily available on phones that it would be much easier to utilize them for learning. These codes are very popular in Japan and certainly could make it much easier to access specific content.

The USA Today article cites InfoTrends/CAP Ventures stating this year 89% of new mobile phones shipped to the U.S. will have cameras.

This month Nokia rolled out their Point and Find project in a limited area, but it could have a lot of potential uses for learning.
Check out the iVisit real time object recognition for the blind YouTube video for some very powerful capabilities.

Background video is available today even on the first generation iPhone that I have. A new app entitled Email 'n Walk was created for those who are engaged with their phones and don't look where they are going. Thus a view of one's surroundings through the working screen (see screen capture above.)

Not utilizing the camera, but GPS is an interactive 3D map from UpNext (UpNext NYC) to explore and search Manhattan. The app is available for the iPhone as well, and includes connections to Twitter and Facebook. Something like this could be used for new student or employee orientation to a campus.

Design Considerations

These days I don't seem to find much time to develop actual mobile learning other than to create examples when testing various tools, but I do like to read Tom Kuhlmann's rapid e-Learning blog on development. This week his excellent description of push and pull e-learning fits right into mobile learning development.

"By changing the way you structure the information, you can quickly build the framework for more engaging and interactive courses. It’s just a matter of rethinking how you approach the course design.

When you push the information out, you spend your time trying to figure out the best way to get it to the learners and make it stick. On the other hand, when you design the course for the learners to pull the information, you spend your time figuring out how they would use it and then set it up for them to pull the content."

Some of the examples in the blog and in the comments could easily apply to mobile.

Mobile ESL

Athabasca University in Canada has released their English as a Second Language course for mobile under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 License.

There are eighty-six sections, each with exercises. Their hope -- according to their video -- is that non-English speakers from around the world are able to access it on their mobile devices and use it to learn English.

Access is via a browser at http://eslau.ca. They hae also made the source code available for download.

Types of Mobile Learning

Most conversations about mobile learning I have had recently seem to start with the assumptions that mobile learning is e-learning on small screens. Although it can be that, it is so much more!

Mobile learning can occur in the classroom, during an online course or anywhere the learner has their mobile device. He/she does not even have to be mobile. It is not about the device, but about the connectivity, capabilities and experience. Access through mobile devices should be a choice and a part of the total learning environment.

I believe that we are at the beginning of discovering all the possibilities and benefits and have started a list of opportunities today. What did I miss? Please add your comments.

Military Mobile Learning

For the past couple years I have been aware of Vcom3D and the mobile learning work they have done for the military. Recently Newsweek featured their solution in an article Apple's New Weapon. I had seen demos as well, but had not done a thorough review.

In talking with Vcom3D a couple weeks ago, the CEO offered to send me a loaner iPod Touch unit with their learning modules to review.

It arrived this week and I expected to just unpack an iPod Touch. Imagine my surprise when I opened the box and found a miniature backpack or MOLLE.

It was quite heavy. I proceeded to unpack it and found a complete, very well-thought-out system with various fasteners and arm bands, speakers, and clips. It appears that some may even ship with solar chargers.

Today these units are used in operation in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Sudan by the Army, Air Force and US Military Observer Group. Modules are available for language and culture training in several languages and dialects, medical training and quick reference, plus equipment operation. Readily available when and where needed.

It is so evident that they considered the entire solution when deploying this important mobile learning. Great job Vcom3D.

Nokia Life Tools

It looks like Nokia is getting ready to roll out their Life Tools, which include mobile learning. They are working with EnableM in India to provide language lessons, quizzes on English words and phrases, and the general knowledge information. The project was announced last November, but just rolling out now. (Thanks Twitter @shegeek.)

I talked with EnableM's COO last week who updated me on a number of exciting projects and plans to deliver these capabilities in other countries. I certainly plan to follow their progress with this exciting project.

Is "Mobile" Limiting Our Discussions?

Lots more mobile learning discussions this week... On Monday I presented at the Wisconsin Charter Schools Association Conference, Tuesday and Wednesday attended the Design4Mobile Conference virtually as well as attending the Mobile Learning Innovation: Healthcare Leads The Way webinar by Ambient Insight, and on Thursday discussed mobile learning on the Masie Consortium call (with over 250 registered participants.)

Starting the discussion of mobile learning is often difficult because of existing perceptions about what it is, let along what it can be. With the K-12 audience it tends to be more about policies that prohibit the devices, than about the potential of having ubiquitous digital access to the world.

Most people unfortunately think of mobile learning--or mlearning--as elearning on a small screen. I think that a definition of “learning at the point of need” used by Dr. Conrad Gottfredson and Bob Mosher may make more sense.

Should we drop the word mobile? Is it keeping us from discovering the potential?

I depend upon my always-available, always-on mobile devices throughout the day whether I am on the road or in my office, and continue to find more benefits. We are carrying a powerful multimedia computer in our pockets and purses. Isn't it really more about the capabilities, availability, connectivity, useful applications, and convenience?

The power of always-available access to learning materials for review, expert assistance, updates on what I have already learned, or new learning when I need it (or can find the time) can’t be underestimated.

What do you think, should we come up with another term for this powerful continuous learning tool? Would that help to change the discussions about the potential for the future? Please leave your comments below.

New School Alert System

This week I received a message from Jonathan Hoover about a new application his not-for-profit organization had released. I do not recommend products, but thought that this sounded like something that may be of interest to school administrators reading this blog. Note that I have not tried it, but if you have a need, it should be worth a look.

Through Schoohoo (www.schoohoo.com) he and his wife programmed an application to deliver free school alerts to schools of any size and at any grade level "From Preschool to Ph.D."(tm).

Alerts are sent via text message and email to parents, students, faculty, staff and others in the community about emergencies, but also weather closings, holidays, other days off, registration dates/times, PTA events, and the like. Parents can sign up themselves, so the school doesn't have to maintain the database. There will be a short advertisement included, or an advertisement-free version is available starting at $500 per year.

Where do I start?

This week I went to Washington DC for a couple days, so have been trying to get through all the updates that weren't otherwise posted on mLearnopedia.com. I haven't read through all of the following, but wanted to share these great resources.

Stanford University started an iPhone Application Programming course this week and has made the slides and video available through iTunes U here. You can subscribe to the new lectures which are posted each Wednesday and Friday for this ten week course.
A new 320-page book entitled “Mobile Learning: Transforming the Delivery of Education and Training” edited by Mohamed Ally and published by Athabasca University is available for sale or as a free PDF download . (Click on eBook for the PDF download.)
The International Journal of Interactive Mobile Technologies (iJIM) has released issue Vol. 3, No. 2 (2009) with some very interesting papers. The objective of the journal is to publish and discuss fundamentals, applications and experiences in the field of interactive mobile technologies in learning and teaching as well as in industrial and other applications. There is no fee, but you will need to register.
The abstracts from the 3rd WLE Mobile Learning Symposium: Mobile Learning Cultures across Education, Work and Leisure in London, UK, on 27 March 2009 have been posted.
Weeding through all the joke posts on April 1^st, I am glad that I didn't miss Tom Kuhlmann's blog titled “Here's What You Need to Know About Mobile Learning.” It definitely is a lot of fun!

AT&T announced its second annual Big Mobile On Campus Challenge, a national higher education contest for mobile application development with a $10,000 Scholarship award available. “The contest recognizes innovative and creative mobile applications that enhance academic performance, build campus community and help to improve campus operations.” There are three categories: mobile learning, mobile identity and student system integration.

Mobile Phones to Monitor Teenagers Mental Health

Thanks to Holly Hart for forwarding a very interesting article about monitoring and behavioral change using mobile phones. Not mobile learning, but an important pilot to help in the treatment of 14-24 year-olds with depression issues.

The program was created by the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute (MCRI) and funded by the Telstra Foundation for two years. The program monitors "each young person's mood, stress levels, coping strategies, alcohol and cannabis use, exercise, eating patterns and general lifestyle factors." By using the communications capabilities of mobile phones and SMS messages, MCRI hopes to better capture information and provide earlier treatment.

There are other pilot behavioral change projects taking place in such areas as executive coaching. It will be interesting to follow these projects and see how what they find can be applied to learning.

Blackboard Goes Mobile

Congratulations to Blackboard for releasing their first mobile learning app. This is further indication that there is definitely movement in the direction of mobile for learning. (Desire2Learn had already released 2GO for use with the BlackBerry.)

I did download the Blackboard application on an iPhone, but don't have a BlackBoard account so can't really test it. The comments in the Apple App Store are quite negative. Have you tried it? If so, what is your reaction?

Children and Mobile Phones

Thanks to BECTA in the UK for pointing out a report entitled Children’s Use of Mobile Phones — An International Comparison February 2009. Details are taken from interviews and data from Japan, Korea, China, India and Mexico. There is a lot we all can learn from such global initiatives.

"Mobile phones are becoming ubiquitous and, in line with this trend, children’s use of mobile phones has increased to the point where mobile phones are becoming commodities for them."

Included in the report is a section on mobile phone literacy as well as an appendix with examples of use of mobile phones by children in target countries.

The 60-page report was published in 2009 by the GSM Association and the Mobile Society Research Institute within NTT DOCOMO and is available for download here.

Mexican Mobile Learning Initiative Info

A Visit to Abilene Christian University

Today I was excited to visit the folks at Abilene Christian University (ACU) in Abilene, TX, to talk about mobile learning. Their ConnectEd initiative has been well covered in just about every publication that covers education and technology, plus they have shared a lot of information through their website and blogs. I have followed ACU since I first saw their video last year and all was pretty well as I had expected. Lots of students with iPhones or iPods and lots of activity.

I was unable to attend their sold-out conference at the end of February due to another commitment, but all their materials are (or very soon will be) on their ConnectEd Summit 2009 site.

As a bit of history I learned that, like other institutions, ACU had been looking at laptops and tablets for students. At a group meeting to discuss ubiquitous computing, someone asked how are we going to restrict these cell phones? 98% of the student population used these devices. Luckily rather than to outlaw or otherwise restrict them, they embraced them and supported the constant connectivity.

The excitement of the faculty and staff to think outside the box and better prepare students for the new connected world was impressive, plus the members of the team were very open and willing to consider new ideas. When I arrived they were discussing the new integrated curriculum they are planning. They continue to think of how they can improve the student experience and are anxiously awaiting the news tomorrow of version 3.0 details for the iPhone.

What I didn't expect to be impressed by was their library. They have created a very active center where students can talk aloud, collaborate and receive assistance. They can also grab a cup of coffee or drink from the Starbucks right in the library. There are areas for students to receive help with their writing, presentations, research, and technical issues. There is even a copy center. What they are planning on the floor above is to expand this center for assistance with creating videos, audio or other types of multimedia and to integrate these materials into their presentations and other work.

If you get a chance to visit them or attend one of their next conferences, I would definitely recommend it. In any case, keep your eyes on ACU as we can all learn from them.
